Skimmers

Skimmers and skimming spoons: your versatile kitchen gadgets

Once you buy a skimmer, you’ll never look back. Even amateur cooks rely on skimmers for fishing food out of hot water or oil when preparing certain dishes. We’ve put together some information for you on what exactly a skimmer is, how you use it and which different models you can buy on our store.

What is a skimmer?

A skimming ladle differs from a normal ladle in that it is flatter and has holes in the bottom. The reason for this is that, instead of scooping liquids out of the pan, skimmers are used to take cooked food out of water, oil or broth. The holes allow liquid to run off into the pan so that your food isn’t wet and soggy and the head features a slight curve to make it easier to scoop food off the bottom of the pan.

When should I use a skimming ladle?

Skimming spoons aren’t just reserved for professional kitchens, there’s a place for them in every household. They’re an absolute must-have for removing freshly-cooked fries from oil, or if you want to add beef or chicken juices to your pan and keep the meat at bay. Do you like your vegetables blanched? Then you’ll need a skimmer to fish them out of the hot water. Skimmers can even be used for removing pasta from water and letting it drain when you don’t have a pot insert to hand or for stirring when you’re making risotto, for example.

Stainless steel or silicone: which is better?

Browsing our range of skimmers, you’ll see that we have products available in both stainless steel and silicone. To help you make your decision, we’ve put together the pros and cons of the two styles.

Stainless steel skimmers: the pros

Stainless steel skimming spoons are very sophisticated in look and make for a radiant combination together with your other kitchen utensils. Our skimmers are made from 18/10 stainless steel, a material which has an array of advantages.

Resistant to corrosion

Skimming spoons come into constant contact with water and so it’s very important that the material they’re made from doesn’t rust. 18/10 stainless steel is resistant to corrosion, so you’ll be able to use your skimmer for years to come.

Neutral in taste

18/10 stainless steel is neutral in taste and does not affect the flavor of your food.

Resistant to heat

Stainless steel skimming spoons are resistant to heat, so you can use them in boiling water without hesitation.

Our stainless steel skimmers are decorative in design and their shape has been optimized for ease of use.

Silicone skimming ladles: the pros

Silicone skimming spoons are useful if the bottom of your pot or pan is coated or susceptible to damage. Harder materials like stainless steel can scratch the coating, but this can be avoided with silicone. This material is also resistant to heat and dishwasher-safe.

Good to know: on our online store, you can also find ladles which feature silicone in combination with other materials, such as an ergonomic handle made of wood.

Have you already picked a skimmers out of our range? If so, we look forward to receiving your order.
