Rated 4 out of 5 by from Comfortable handle, sharp as surgical steel, light This knife came surgically sharp right out of the packaging. The handle is absolutely perfect for my larger sized hands, giving me a perfect, comfortable grip. This is not a heavy knife, which surprised me, but i am comparing it to a slightly larger Zwilling JA Henckel's Four Star Santoku that I own. With that said, I have been using this Synergy Santoku more often then the Zwilling, and the Synergy is in my hands daily now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My son was wowwed when he got this knife. I gave my 30-something son this knife as a birthday/housewarming gift. It was part of a set of three ordered from Henckels (also a paring and an 8-inch). He picked up this knife first and with a big smile on his face, turned to his girlfriend and proclaimed "this is MY knife. Now I can do some serious cooking." They then jokingly bantered whether she would be have the privilege to use any of HIS Henckels knives.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfortable knife handle! This Santoku knife is beautifully made and exceptional design. Chef knife or Santoku knife is certainly a versatile kitchen knife nowadays, An 8" is reasonably a standard knife size to have for every cook and this sturdy 5" will do just fine. Indention on the blade creates barrier between the food and the steel, preventing food from sticking. Forged knife are durable and could stand rusting and corrosion. It is so sharp to go through any meat, poultry, vegetable, herb, or fruits. Dishwasher safe, hand washing is recommended.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sharp Style, BLADE DULL, I GOT NO SYNERGY! Brand new out of the package this knife would not cut a tomato, a piece of paper, or my finger either. Bad quality control on the final sharpening before Packaging! The Chinese robots must have gone home early. No human would ever consider this knife Sharp if it was inspected. Secondly the grantons are only on the left side of the blade causing uneven resistance. I'm not sure if this was an Omission by Design or the same robot that forgot to sharpen the knife also forgot to put the grantons on both sides? These two shortcomings made a very bad first impression. America's Test Kitchen said in their testing of santoku knives that the grantons made little difference in knives ability to release food from the surface of the blade, but having them only on one side does effect the knifes ability to stay on course when slicing rapidly in succession. If this isn't a defect it makes no sense unless the blade is too thin to accommodate them on both sides, in which case leave them off completely! J A Henckles please address these shortcomings that have affected my customer satisfaction of an otherwise nicely balanced, comfortable with good handle affordance, affordably priced and stylishly designed knife. Six passes through my XV diamond sharpener and six honing/stroping passes put a razor sharp dual 15°edge on its blade for the first time and it now can cut tomatoes, onions and finely mince garlic and restored the way it was supposed to deliver full SYNERGY during my first usage of this brand new just opened product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well designed Priced right for a well designed knife. Japanese style, full tang for durability, and great balance and weight. Glides effortlessly through fruits, vegetables, meats and cheeses with hollow blade edge preventing food from sticking. This is my go to knife, and I use it instead of a traditional chef's knife. Lighter and easier to control. Makes cutting and chopping less of a chore and much more enjoyable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This knife is made from high quality German steel so durable and not rusting or tarnishing. The bolster (the middle of the knife) is forged so no stress points for future breakage. The blade is so sharp, will get through anything even the toughest of vegetables. The knife also has hollow edges on it to help move away food from the blade as you cut, so no stopping mid point to move pieces off the knife.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great kitchen knife This my preferred cutting tool. Any santoku really, but ones with the Granton edge are exceptionally good to work with. This 7-inch santoku is a fine medium weight; easy to handle if you are working for hours and hours, or even for a few minutes. Plus it is a part of the Forged Synergy line, an elegant line of forged knives. The graceful sculpted handles fit snugly in the palm of the hand; and an integrated bolster that makes these medium weight knives comfortable to grip. The double-riveted handles securely encase the full tang blade. These knives are forged from high quality German stainless steel and manufactured to the highest global standards. That means these knives are sharp and can resharpened again and again giving you years of enjoyment. High quality at a great price. Really good value. Although they are dishwasher safe, I recommend hand washing them. They will retain the ‘just purchased’ look.

I want to sharpen this blade. Is the angle 15 degrees, and do I sharpen both sides?

Asked by: GNeville
The angle is 10 to 11 degrees on each side.

I just received this knife from Kohl’s. I have four other Santoku style knives, two of which are JA Henckels, and all have the blade indentations on both sides of the blade. The one I received only has indentations on one side - is this an error?

Asked by: Iloveclyde
The Hollow Edge is on one side the Blade for this Knife.

What knife sheaths do you recommend for our new Forged Synergy 7" and 5" Santoku and 3" Kudamono knives? Do you know of a retail outlet or can we purchase online? Thanks.

Asked by: SteveandVena
Most sheaths or covers that accommodate an 8" chef's knife will fit the two santokus, and most designed for a paring knife will fit the kudamono (this may vary by brand and style). We have some sheaths available below. This are mostly meant to protect the blade short-term for storage or transport. http://www.zwillingonline.com/cutlery-zwilling-storage.html
