Tungsten is a metal that offers some of the highest tensile strength. It is an excellent choice for sharpening harder steels that are often used in Japanese cutlery, because it can maintain its granular structure. this promises an appropriate surface for sharpening. It can be used on softer steels as well providing faster results but the possibility of over sharpening (bending over the edge) should be considered.

Great way to keep my knives sharper longer
I was noticing that my knives were getting dull more often than I thought they should be, so I looked into why this could be happening and I found out that if you use a honing steel, it straightens your blade from the normal wear and tear that it goes through, effectively keeping your knives sharper for a longer time. This honing steel in particular is great because it is made out of tungsten, which is a great way to sharpen blades.

The Miyabi Tungsten steel is perfect for honing both Japanese and German cutlery. Extremely hard, high enough on the Rockwell to use on even the hardest steels. Nine inches in length, perfect for honing paring, utility, carving, and chef's knife. Frequent use will keep blades sharp, and also removes small niches and scratches.

Each time you use your knives the straight edge becomes slightly out of alignment even before it dulls. Using a sharpening steel is important to realign your knife edge and keep it performing its best in between sharpening. This steel is great for your Miyabi knives.
