Makes about 16-20 beignets
INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 tbsp salted butter
- 1 package rapid rise yeast
- 1/3 cup white sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 egg
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- Canola oil, for frying
- Powdered sugar, for dusting
HOW TO MAKE IT
- In a microwave-safe bowl, combine milk and butter and heat in 30-second intervals until the butter is melted.
- Pour the mixture into the bowl of a stand mixer and whisk in the yeast, sugar, salt, and egg.
- Mix in the flour with a spatula until a dough begins to form.
- Attach the dough hook and knead on medium speed for 5 minutes.
- Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 2 hours.
- Roll the dough out on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness.
- Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut the beignets. Cut a small slit at the top of each heart to help them keep their shape.
- Heat canola oil in a large cast iron pan to 360°F.
- Fry the beignets for about 90 seconds per side, or until golden brown.
- Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to cool. Dust with powdered sugar and enjoy.
