Why Clean Your Kettle
There are several good reasons why you should descale your kettle and clean traces of everyday use. Water-related lime deposits on the inner walls, especially on the bottom of the kettle, are quite normal, but they also bring some potential consequences:
- Lime deposits can leave white streaks in the appliance.
- Limescale can change the taste of the water.
- Deposits can interfere with day-to-day operation and damage the kettle.
- A calcified kettle requires a significantly longer time – and therefore more energy – to heat water.
Where do the limescale deposits in the kettle come from? From the water! Lime is a completely natural component – some regions have more of it than others. Lime-containing or “hard” water is not harmful – it actually contains more magnesium and calcium than “soft” water, which are nutrients your body needs. However, your kettle does not need it.
If you want to know how high the lime concentration is in your tap water, your water company can tell you. You can also measure the water hardness yourself with a test strip. This should help you determine how often you need to descale your kettle. But remember, even “soft” water will contain a certain lime concentration.
You can prevent limescale by using a water filter. This removes lime from the water. As a result, much less of it will end up in the kettle, and you will have to descale your kettle less often.
How regularly is it recommended to clean your kettle? Similar to the coffee maker, regular descaling is always a good idea, but it’s especially important when there are visible lime deposits in the kettle. There will show up in your kettle depending on the frequency and intensity of use. But now you know how to deal with it.
