STEP BY STEP TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS

To mark Earth Day on April 22, 2024, we have launched a limited special edition of the ZWILLING PRO series made from low-CO₂ Circle Green steel. The five-piece set features a special Earth Day engraving and the letters RC for Reduced Carbon – a visible sign of the change in knife production. The handles are made of FSC®-certified Kotibé wood, a particularly durable hardwood from sustainable forestry.

The launch was not only a symbolic milestone but also a test run for the market introduction of the new steel. The models were available in Europe and Canada and sold out within a short time. Due to high demand and positive feedback, we plan to reissue the Earth Day Edition in the future.

For decades, STAUB cocottes have been synonymous with robustness and durability. Made from high-quality cast iron, the roasting pans now contain an increasing proportion of recycled material. This saves primary resources and reduces energy consumption and CO₂ emissions in the production process.

The packaging also follows clear environmental principles: instead of colored printed cardboard, uncolored, uncoated cardboard is now used—made from up to 80% recycled paper and fully recyclable. Ink consumption has been almost halved. With their combination of first-class quality, durable materials, and resource-saving packaging, STAUB roasting pans set standards – today and tomorrow.

The packaging for our cutlery now contains almost no plastic. Instead of heavy boxes with plastic coating and plastic inserts, we use almost exclusively paper and cardboard. The tray is also made of cardboard, which is obtained from bamboo, sugar cane, or poplar fibre. And while the cutlery items were previously packaged individually in polybags, they are now wrapped in tissue paper.

Only the outer paper sleeve initially used proved to be insufficient in practice, as it did not protect against damage during transport and in stores. We therefore opted for a compromise: the box is now wrapped in a wafer-thin film. It accounts for less than 1 percent of the packaging weight and is easy to remove and recycle. This saves us around 60 tons of plastic per year – and protects the product safely. (Based on cutlery sales in 2022).

In recent years, we have almost completely switched to materials made from renewable raw materials for the packaging of our knife series manufactured in Solingen, including ZWILLING PRO, GOURMET, FOUR STAR, and ALLSTAR. The folding box, inlay, and hanger are made from paper-based components and are easy to recycle. We only use a small polyethylene cap to protect the sensitive knife tip, which secures the product during transport and minimizes the risk of injury when unpacking.

Overall, we have significantly reduced the use of plastic along the entire packaging line. By changing the packaging of our best-selling FOUR STAR chef's knife alone, we will have saved around 1.9 tons of plastic in 2024, thereby helping to reduce the consumption of fossil raw materials and avoid plastic waste.
