Food has a fixed life span. This is indicated by the best before date (BBD), although there is a certain amount of leeway here. The first reason for this is that not all food will necessarily go bad on the BBD. The second reason for this is that you can keep food fresh even beyond the BBD. BEST BEFORE DATES ON FOOD – A MYTH OR A MANDATORY REQUIREMENT?

The BBD can be found on almost all products, ingredients and food. Food BBDs are often misunderstood and, for example, confused with the use by date. This means that lots of food is thrown away by mistake. This is one of the biggest factors in food waste, because lots of people think that food also has to be used or thrown away by this date. But is that right?

No, it isn’t – especially not for food that you haven’t opened yet. The BBD on packaged food is only a guide as to when food should be used by and how long it will it retain its typical qualities in terms of smell and taste. Stored correctly, you can keep packaged food that has remained sealed until then, and even enjoy it past the BBD.
