Practical safety rules
The top principle: Always handle knives with the utmost care!
Knives need to be sharp. This means that certain safety rules should be followed while using them. By observing the following tips injuries can be avoided!
Sharpen knives regularly
A sharp knife is safer than a blunt knife because it requires less pressure when cutting. It "bites" deeper into the produce, does not slip easily and is less tiring on the hand.
To be able to enjoy your ZWILLING J.A. HENCKELS knife for a long period of time we recommend re-sharpening it occasionally. The sharpening steel, the sharpening stone (TWIN Stone) or the TWINSHARP sharpener will all deliver the desired sharpness. For easy re-sharpening we recommend TWINSHARP Select (art.no. 32601-000). Please look up the “how to” in our Mediathek video section.
Put down knives where they can be seen
Always put down knives where they can clearly be seen, with the handle towards you and far enough from the edge of the worktop to ensure that they cannot fall onto the floor. If the knife is covered with a kitchen cloth there is a risk that you may unintentionally grasp the blade. Always pick up a knife by the handle. If you pass a knife to someone else, only do so with the handle pointing forward.
Always use the right knife
Vegetables, meat, fish, cold cuts and bread vary considerably in size and texture. That is why there is a suitable knife for every purpose.
Cut away from the body
Always cut away from the body to avoid injuries in cased the knife slips.
Handling knives safely
Cleaning
Never simply put a knife into the washing-up water. Dry the blade from the back towards the cutting edge, never along the cutting edge from the handle to the tip.
Keep knives safe
Knives
need a safe storage place to prevent injuries and save the blade from damages.
A knife block is the perfect answer to both requirements. A magnetic rack will
also store quality knives safely and allows easy access.
When using a rack the magnets need to be powerful enough and the knives clean.
A greasy or heavy knife will not cling securely to the magnet.
Keep children away from sharp knives!
Keep sharp kitchen knives well away from the reach of children.
Never run your finger along the cutting edge
Not even to test it for sharpness!
Avoid direct proximity to any source of heat
Never leave a knife on a hot plate or in direct proximity to any source of heat to avoid damages or burns.
